If I use scented lotion from, say Bath and Body Works, to give a hand job, would that be harmful in any way?

Dear Suzie:

Aside from unique allergic reactions, I can only think of a few ways that scented lotions may be potentially harmful. If you are planning on having sex using a latex barrier post lotion hand-job, be sure to read the ingredients on the label. If it has any kind of oil in it, then it is not condom-safe, and must be washed off before sex as oils tend to wear down latex in under one minute. Similarly, if you are planning on having vaginal sex after using the lotion, be sure to check for glycerin or sugar in the ingredients as they can cause  yeast infections in some women.

It sounds like you’ve done your research when it comes to switching gears from back to front-door loving. Those lady bits can be extremely sensitive when it comes to new bacteria, and even a millisecond of ass to vag – whether it’s a finger, a mouth, a toy, or a homegrown cock – may result in an instant yeast infection for some women. So yes, it is never recommended to go from ass to vag unless you’ve taken proper precautions to clean said toy/body part.

To answer your first question, I would say your average household body soap/shower gel should be sufficient. If she knows she is susceptible to yeast infections, a glycerin-free soap may be preferable as glycerin can also cause yeast infections for some women. Make sure to wash all the soap off, and lightly scrub around any crevices where bacteria may hide (i.e. head of penis, foreskin, fingernails, etc). If you are dealing with toys, most non-motorized, non-porus sex toys (such as silicone, glass, or stainless steel) can be boiled for a few minutes, or even thrown in the dishwasher for a thourough cleaning.

In reference to your second question, I really don’t know if you have a window for when the post-ass play bacteria is no longer an issue for said vagina. I’m sure some of the bacteria will die overtime, but nothing is certain, so your best bet is to clean the area before diving into V town.

How do get the burning to subside after using toy?

First of all, I would like to suggest a few reasons you might be getting this burning sensation. The main one that springs to mind is that you are using a toy with toxic chemicals in it. Unfortunately, the sex toy industry is not exactly regulated by the FDA (as the toys are labeled as “novelty only”), and as a result, many toys are released into stores with harmful chemicals in them (chemicals that are even banned from children’s toys!). These chemicals are known as phthalates. A good way to tell if your toy has phthalates in it is to smell it. If it has a strong smell to it, usually very synthetic and, well, chemically, it probably has phthalates. These chemicals are known to cause a burning sensation to toy users. Try investing in a new toy, one made of phthalate-free materials such as 100% silicone, medical grade hard plastic, or high-quality elastomer. These materials are much easier to take care of and should not leave you with a burning feeling. Note- as a store policy, we do not carry any products that contain phthalates at Pure Pleasure

Another reason you may be experiencing this sensation is the lube that you are using. Everyone reacts differently to the chemicals in different lubes, and so you may want to explore different brands and/or types of lubricants. Silicone lubes, such as Uberlube, are generally good lubes for chemically sensitive people, as the silicone does not absorb into your skin. The only thing to consider is that you cannot use a silicone lube on a silicone toy (the friction will break down the outer layer of your toy). My best advice for a situation like this is to focus on positioning. Certain positions can allow for deeper penetration, which may be what causes your partner discomfort. Other positions prevent very deep penetration, and these are the positions that you and your partner may want to focus on. Some positions I would suggest are girl on top, where she is laying down on you with her legs together. In this position, penetration is controlled more by her, and your entire shaft receives stimulation. You can also try having sex in the spooning position. This position also tends to limit penetration while allowing for stimulation all down the entire cock. There are plenty of other positions for you and your partner to try out, so I would suggest looking into a positions book, including Kama Sutra positions. We have one at the shop right now called The Bedside Kama Sutra that has great pictures of all the positions as well as descriptions of how to get into them.

Another thing to consider is arousal level. As a woman gets aroused, her uterus lifts, elongating her vaginal canal. If you take a long time to get your partner aroused, her vaginal canal will be able to accommodate more of your cock more comfortably. Take your time with her and your patience will pay off.
