40 Days for Life Targets Santa Cruz

September 29, 2010 2 min read

The "40 Days for Life" anti-abortion campaign is at it again, targeting over 200 cities all over Canada, Australia, Europe, and the U.S.. This campaign has been around for a few years in hopes that 40 days of protest, prayer, and fasting will end abortion. As stated as "blessings from God", the 40 Days for Life campaign claims their efforts have not only convinced 36 workers to quit their jobs in the clinics, but they take pride in the fact that 7 clinics have closed down since the campaign began. Oh, and not to mention the fact that "hundreds of women and men have been spared from the tragic effects of abortion, including a lifetime of regrets". Sounds like they want a medal for raising unemployment rates while taking away a woman's right to choose.

Much to my amazement,  the liberal beach town of Santa Cruz ended up on the list of clinics to be targeted. The protesters appear to be working in shifts as there are only a few of them lingering near the downtown Planned Parenthood clinic during any given time throughout  the day. Unfortunately for them, the first week of the campaign occurred during an intense heat wave. Some may call it bad timing or just plain coincidental, but why not look at it as  "God's blessing" once again, indirectly telling us that these people should not be outside picketing in 100 degree weather. One Santa Cruzian and Pro-Choice enthusiast was actually worried for the picketers, primarily because  the majority of these people were elderly, and yet they are choosing to protest while fasting in the blistering sun: "I'm Pro-Life, too" she said, in reference to offering these people some water in order to avoid injury via heat stroke.

With that said, if you are pro-choice, now would be a great time to support Planned Parenthood and a woman's right to choose. Some suggestions include:

Donations:  Show your support by donating a dollar amount for each day we expect protesters outside the health center during this anti-choice vigil. Call 831-460-3111 or email santacruzevents@ppmarmonte.org for more info.

Words of support: Email santacruzevents@ppmarmonte.org to let staff and volunteers know our community supports and appreciates the work they do to ensure every child is a wanted child and every family a healthy family.

Volunteers: Planned Parenthood is scheduling clinic escorts to ensure their clients can access services with limited harassment from protesters.
